Qualitative Research | Methodological Underpinnings
Getting Started: Setting a Positive Intention
The goal of my research design is to gather relevant information that uncovers deep insights about my inquiry and leads to exciting revelations about the moral compasses that inform who leaders are and who they are becoming. I also desire for this discovery process to be awareness building, curiousity sparking, transformative, and overall an enjoyable experience for my participants, dissertation chair, committee members, myself and anyone following my work. I know this is a big ask, but that's my aim and I'm committed to doing my best to make it happen. Who said that research should be a hum-drum, boring and depressingly laborious endeavor anyways? Not this study! I am setting an intention to approach this work with contagious joy, curiosity, rigor and open-mindedness to whatever is wanting to emerge from the process.
Qualitative Data Research Design
Qualitative research is grounded in “understanding the meaning for participants in the study, of the events, situations, experiences, and actions they are involved with or engaged in” (Maxwell, 2012). Using a basic qualitative approach will allow me to draw from the broadest range of methodologies to explore my inquiry question. To this end, I will use an emergent design to account for the degree of flexibility needed and that would be most compatible with the swift changes that commonly occur within the individual as well as corporate context. Acute awareness of and agile responses to individual and organizational shifts and needs will be essential to this study.
Creswell (2013) advises to approach data collection “as a series of interrelated activities aimed at gathering good information to answer emerging research questions” (p. 146). Likewise, my data collection process will comprise of the following interconnected phases:
Participant Selection Criteria
I am looking to engage a diverse group of individuals that meet the following criteria:

Age: Above the age of 18
-
United States based resident
-
Any level of formal education
-
Minimum of 5-7 years of professional work experience directly managing and leading a team of two or more employees
-
Worked in current job for a minimum of 1.5 years
-
Current job is for a public, for-profit organization
-
You may/may not have point of view on the efficacy of love as a significant leadership competency
Individuals may be disqualified from participating in the study for the following reasons:

Current role is within a non-profit or government organization
-
Expresses discomfort or an aversion to exploring love as a significant leadership competency
-
Expresses discomfort or an aversion to spirituality or meditation
-
Expresses discomfort or an aversion to engaging in a regular journaling practice
-
Is not open to submitting a signed Informed Consent and Participant Bill of Rights form prior to engaging in the study as a confirmed participant
-
Does not agree to taking the VIA Inventory of Strengths survey or does not complete the survey within 2 weeks of signing the Informed Consent and Participant Bill of Rights

Is not available to participate for the full duration of the study which in sum will be approximately 2 months
